AHI award for GPO Witness History

The Association for Heritage Interpretation have announced the results of the AHI 2017 Discover Heritage Awards – for excellence in cultural and natural heritage interpretation in Britain and Ireland. 

GPO Witness History was a runner up in the Visitor / Interpretation Centre category.  It was purpose built by Kavanagh Tuite and the museum content was by Mark Leslie of Martello Media, for Ireland’s Decade of Centenaries to celebrate its role as the rebel headquarters during the Easter Rising of 1916, the pivotal event of modern Irish History

The judges were very impressed with the way a very contentious subject was told in a remarkably balanced and respectful manner. The experience was engaging and immersive without being trivialised or sensationalised.

The award winners will be announced on Thursday, 23rd November at a dinner to be held at The Convention Centre Dublin.

Dublin Marathon success!

Huge congratulations to our own Joe O'Neill, who completed this year's Dublin Marathon (knocking 16 minutes off his 2016 time in the process) raising money for supportstjames.ie along with members of his family #TeamBabs

Our Projects: Athlone Advanced Technology Building

We were delighted to work on this building for IDA Ireland's Emerging Business Division in the Athlone Business & Technology Park. The design of this building promotes high level daylighting, glare control, robust internal finishes, generous heights for additional mezzanines and high quality materials: sheer metal modular cladding and glazing systems set off by judicious use of stone with high value insulation and air tightness.

Envelope, internal layout and site layout were strategically planned for efficiency and expansion. Materials were evaluated according to LEED methodologies and certification. Site design complies with the sustainability agenda. Landscaping is simple and elegant, reliant on native species in its rural surroundings.

Irish Georgian Society Awards

There was a great turnout at the Irish Architectural Archive last night for the Irish Georgian Society Awards, as Lindsay Conservation Architects scooped a deserved award for The Shelbourne Dublin, a Renaissance Hotel.

We were shortlisted for conservation works to the internal courtyard facades of GPO Witness History. It was lovely to see the diversity of entrants and judges, chaired by Edward McParland.

It was truly humbling to be shortlisted among so many outstanding entries, and it's also fantastic to see the steady growth of awareness of our built environment.

UCD Nova Innovation Centre - East Quadrangle

We are presently designing the East Quadrangle phase of NovaUCD at Merville House. This follows our work on the earlier phases of Nova at Merville House in 2002-2006.

Merville House is a remarkable building which resonates strongly a unique sense of place. This feeds positively into the entrepreneurial culture of University College Dublin Nova.

The East Quadrangle will complement Nova Innovation Centre at Merville House and further increases the visibility of this key university activity which promotes innovation from within academia.

Cundall seminar

CUNDALL SEMINAR

We enjoyed the Cundall 'Beyond Zero' seminar yesterday on how we can be net positive in the office, at home, on projects and in the community.

The seminar was held in Wood Quay, and included the incredible statistic that Qatar's daily electricity consumption could power Sierra Leone for a year.

Merrion Hotel project

Our project on the redevelopment of The 5 Star Merrion Hotel in Dublin is coming along nicely, and is fitting well into the streetscape of Baggot Street.

With the project due to be completed soon, we are excited to see the reaction from patrons and the public.

Winy Mass comes to Dublin

Winy Maas returned to Dublin's Irish Architecture Foundation for the latest New Now Next talk.  He spoke to a full house in Dublin Castle.
Curated by the Irish Architecture Foundation and sponsored by Arup, the purpose of New Now Next is to bring dynamic people to Dublin to inspire audiences who are interested in the innovative research, design and construction of buildings and cities. New Now Next is about disseminating NEW Ideas, regarding contemporary issues relevant NOW that can impact on the NEXT generation.

Norwegian tour of Dublin

We were delighted to give a small presentation to a party of 26 Norwegians on the history and cultural significance of the GPO Witness History, and interactions we had with the Dublin City Council.

The group, from the Oslo, Norway Cultural Heritage Management Office. were fascinated with the delivery of a modern intervention in such a context. It was fantastic to welcome them to the city!

Job description

Kavanagh Tuite are currently seeking experienced architectural professionals with project experience to join the practice to work on a variety of projects.

The successful applicants will have strong design and technical experience in addition to excellent communications skills, and the ability to manage projects through all stages.

This is a busy, energetic and supportive practice, suited to motivated and attentive professionals. A strong interest in all aspects of the construction industry would be expected.

We proactively encourage Continuous Professional Development (CPD), including skills training and mentoring for all staff.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate:

• A motivated and enquiring mind with excellent design, communication and organisational skills.
• Resourcefulness and the ability to multitask effectively within a team environment and manage projects from inception to completion.
• A minimum of 5 years post qualification relevant experience and be registered, or be eligible to be registered, to a suitable body.
• A detailed working knowledge of Irish Planning, Building Regulation and Building Control Legislation.
• IT proficiency and skills required to a high level, including a competence in BIM / Revit.

UCD Belfield Illumination Project

The celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of UCD included the illumination of public areas and buildings within the Belfield Campus, and we were delighted to be involved with the project.
In conjunction with Pritchard Themis Lighting Design and White Young Green, the night-time appearance of the campus has been transformed. The lakeside, water tower and more than a dozen of the campus's buildings have been illuminated in dramatic fashion.

Our expertise

One of the areas in which we specialise is Building Information Modelling (BIM). Our proficiency in BIM is excellent.

We promote the use of coordinated BIM processes on new projects when applicable, and have seen significant benefits within both completed projects and projects in progress when using this modelling.

GPO Witness History Interpretive Centre

This is a culturally significant project in one of Dublin's most iconic buildings on the city’s main thoroughfare, O’Connell Street. It was opened to the public last year for the 2016 centenary of the 1916 Rising. 

The high profile project involved the construction of a new exhibition centre within the restored courtyard of the GPO. The public engagement with the iconic GPO has been hugely enhanced with the opening of the new interpretive centre. We are proud to have been involved in this significant project.
