New South Gates facility opens at Dublin Airport

Kavanagh Tuite successfully teamed up with Arup to support daa to deliver the new South Gates facility within Dublin Airport. The South Gates were constructed airside on a live airport campus where the challenges of security and safety added to the project complexity.

This €22 million boarding gate area was officially opened on 11th December, 2017.  Located south of Terminal 2, work on the new area started early in 2017 on a fast track programme.  This facility will service nine aircraft stands on the South Apron providing a comfortable waiting area from which passengers will be able to walk directly to the aircraft for boarding.  The new South Gates area, which will be used mainly by Aer Lingus for flights to the UK and continental Europe, has five boarding gates serving nine aircraft parking stands.

The South Gates boarding area is part of a €100 million plus investment programme at Dublin Airport this year, as improvements are made to existing passenger and airfield areas and new facilities are delivered.

The facility comprises a single storey structure of lightweight modular construction to meet the demands of the rapid construction programme. The 2,200 square metre facility was built offsite in 80 modules and then transported to Dublin Airport for final assembly. The gates have been designed to accommodate departing flights in the busy early morning period and arriving flights in the evening.

The new facility can also be segregated so that departing and arriving passengers can be processed at the same time. Shuttle buses will transport passengers to and from the new boarding gates. The new building can accommodate almost 1,000 passengers and includes a café, toilets, baby changing facilities and a workstation area with plugs and charging points.

Our Projects: Athlone Advanced Technology Building

We were delighted to work on this building for IDA Ireland's Emerging Business Division in the Athlone Business & Technology Park. The design of this building promotes high level daylighting, glare control, robust internal finishes, generous heights for additional mezzanines and high quality materials: sheer metal modular cladding and glazing systems set off by judicious use of stone with high value insulation and air tightness.

Envelope, internal layout and site layout were strategically planned for efficiency and expansion. Materials were evaluated according to LEED methodologies and certification. Site design complies with the sustainability agenda. Landscaping is simple and elegant, reliant on native species in its rural surroundings.

UCD Nova Innovation Centre - East Quadrangle

We are presently designing the East Quadrangle phase of NovaUCD at Merville House. This follows our work on the earlier phases of Nova at Merville House in 2002-2006.

Merville House is a remarkable building which resonates strongly a unique sense of place. This feeds positively into the entrepreneurial culture of University College Dublin Nova.

The East Quadrangle will complement Nova Innovation Centre at Merville House and further increases the visibility of this key university activity which promotes innovation from within academia.

Norwegian tour of Dublin

We were delighted to give a small presentation to a party of 26 Norwegians on the history and cultural significance of the GPO Witness History, and interactions we had with the Dublin City Council.

The group, from the Oslo, Norway Cultural Heritage Management Office. were fascinated with the delivery of a modern intervention in such a context. It was fantastic to welcome them to the city!

GPO Witness History Interpretive Centre

This is a culturally significant project in one of Dublin's most iconic buildings on the city’s main thoroughfare, O’Connell Street. It was opened to the public last year for the 2016 centenary of the 1916 Rising. 

The high profile project involved the construction of a new exhibition centre within the restored courtyard of the GPO. The public engagement with the iconic GPO has been hugely enhanced with the opening of the new interpretive centre. We are proud to have been involved in this significant project.

Capstones Shift: 1916 Centenary Lecture Series

Along with Stephen Ferguson, Assistant Secretary of An Post, Brian Kavanagh, Fergal Ryan and Joy Kearns, of Kavanagh Tuite Architects, were invited to speak at RIAI for its Capstone Shift lecture series. 

'To mark the Centenary of 1916, the Irish Architectural Archive (IAA), the RIAI and its journal Architecture Ireland have developed a joint programme of lectures and articles entitled ‘Capstones Shift: Architectural Legacies of the Easter Rising’ which run throughout 2016. The lectures are accompanied by a series of articles in Architecture Ireland and focus on a selection of prominent Dublin buildings destroyed or utterly changed by the events of Easter 1916 and later. These buildings were central to myriad social, commercial, political and religious patterns of life. Their absence, or removal from use, would have had an immediate and disconcerting effect on the daily routines and interactions of thousands of ordinary Dubliners as they lived, moved, worked, prayed and entertained themselves in the post-Rising city, quotidian disruptions making unavoidable and un-ignorable the profound political phase-shift that had occurred.'

Brian and Fergal gave a fascinating and insightful lecture about the process of restoring the East courtyard to its former glory, the importance of craftsmanship involved within the conservation of such an complex landmark building, and the challenges met and overcome with the construction of the GPO Witness History, the new contemporary exhibition centre, that twines itself within the fabric and history of one of Dublin's most iconic buildings.
