The Association for Heritage Interpretation have announced the results of the AHI 2017 Discover Heritage Awards – for excellence in cultural and natural heritage interpretation in Britain and Ireland.

GPO Witness History was a runner up in the Visitor / Interpretation Centre category.  It was purpose built by Kavanagh Tuite and the museum content was by Mark Leslie of Martello Media, for Ireland’s Decade of Centenaries to celebrate its role as the rebel headquarters during the Easter Rising of 1916, the pivotal event of modern Irish History

The judges were very impressed with the way a very contentious subject was told in a remarkably balanced and respectful manner. The experience was engaging and immersive without being trivialised or sensationalised.

Kavanagh Tuite send their congratulations to Mark Leslie and all who contributed through Martello Media.

GPO Witness History Interpretive Centre by Stephen Moylan

This is a culturally significant project in one of Dublin's most iconic buildings on the city’s main thoroughfare, O’Connell Street. It was opened to the public last year for the 2016 centenary of the 1916 Rising.

The high profile project involved the construction of a new exhibition centre within the restored courtyard of the GPO. The public engagement with the iconic GPO has been hugely enhanced with the opening of the new interpretive centre. We are proud to have been involved in this significant project.

GPO Witness History wins Civic Trust Award 2017 by Fergal Ryan

GPO WITNESS HISTORY is Awarded at the 2017 Civic Trust Awards.

The 58th Annual Civic Trust Awards Ceremony was held on Friday 10 March at the Guildhall Winchester.

From 247 applications, 45 national and international projects were rewarded with a Civic Trust Award or Commendation, which included 5 Special Awards.

GPO Witness History was one of only four international awards presented on the night. There were some truly exceptional schemes in the final round, and after much debate, the National Panel gave 5 Special Awards, 19 Civic Trust Awards and 26 Commendations. In addition, one award was made from the conservation projects by the Civic Trust Awards Conservation Panel.

The Civic Trust Awards scheme was established in 1959 to recognise outstanding architecture, planning and design in the built environment.

As the longest standing, independent built environment awards scheme in Europe, during the last 57 years, more than 6,500 projects have been rewarded and the scheme has continued in its objective to recognise significant projects that have made a positive contribution to the local communities they serve.

Civic Trust Award Event 2017

Embodied showcased at the newly opened GPO Witness History by Stephen Moylan

Commissioned by An Post Witness History, and in association with Dublin Dance Festival, Embodied is a series of six new dance solos by female choreographers based in Ireland that calls attention to the role of women as initiators of change within Irish society. Over a course of three nights the performance journeyed through the original fabric of the GPO building and newly opened GPO Witness History Centre. This was an unique opportunity to see an intimate and historically poignant performance nestled in the eye-catching surrounds of the GPO's east courtyard.

The Easter Sunday events begin at 11.30am on March 27th with the reading of the 1916 Proclamation under the GPO portico by a Defence Forces officer.  The President will lay a wreath on behalf of the people of Ireland, followed by a minute’s silence for all those who died.  The national flag above the GPO will be raised to full mast and the national anthem played.  The parade, led by the Defence Forces in full military display, will begin at St Stephen’s Green, pass the GPO and continue to Parnell Square.  It will conclude with an Air Corps flypast and a 21-gun salute.
